This resource is highly vulnerable to human pollution. The actions of oil companies and other corporations can leave this water polluted and contaminated. Groundwater can become polluted if oil, gasoline, or other chemicals leak into the ground and contaminate the water. Toxic chemicals used in oilfield drilling and other types of mining can contaminate groundwater. Drinking contaminated or polluted groundwater can be hazardous to your health. Individuals can be poisoned when chemicals get into the groundwater. If septic tank waste gets into the groundwater, individuals can suffer from disease.

According to the Groundwater Foundation, there are several main sources of groundwater pollution. These sources include:

  • Oil Storage. While many oil storage tanks are above-ground, if oil leaks from these tanks, the groundwater can potentially become polluted.
  • Septic Systems. A properly designed septic system will dispose of human waste in a steady manner over time. However, when these systems break down or are poorly designed, the waste in these systems can get into the groundwater, posing a risk to human health.
  • Mining companies, oil sites, and other industries use dangerous chemicals. If these chemicals get into the ground, they can contaminate the groundwater.

Groundwater pollution can be costly to clean. NEW ORLEANS GROUNDWATER POLLUTION

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, the floodwaters that hurricanes Rita and Katrina swept into New Orleans left behind settlements that may have been contaminated by toxic chemicals from industrial sites. The NRDC recently published the data released by the Environmental Protection Agency and found that many districts in New Orleans contain levels of lead, arsenic, diesel fuel, and cancer-causing benzoapyrene. The levels the Environmental Protection Agency found were high enough that, in most cases, they would result in soil cleanups. In fact, the NRDC found that levels were sometimes higher than ten times or even a hundred times higher than levels that would typically trigger soil cleanups.

Is your neighborhood affected by ground pollution and possibly groundwater pollution? According to the NRDC’s report, Gert Town, the Lake Terrace Neighborhood, Chalmette, and the St. Roch neighborhood all showed high levels of contamination. Bywater also showed high levels of contamination of cancer-causing chemicals. However, it is important to note that the EPA did not test all areas, so it is possible that other areas may also be suffering from contamination.

High levels of arsenic can pose a cancer risk. Leakage from industrial sites can increase arsenic exposure among New Orleans residents. Neighborhoods like Lakeview, Gentilly, Mid-City, and New Orleans East may be at greater risk of arsenic exposure. Another major risk factor is diesel exposure due to oil spills following recent hurricanes in the area. Many neighborhoods in New Orleans might have been impacted by diesel spills. According to the NRDC, some of the communities most affected are Central City/Garden District, Mid-City, Lakeview, and Bywater. Gentilly and New Orleans East are also impacted. In Chalmette, the diesel fuel contamination exceeded safe levels by 280 times. In St. Roch, the contamination is as much as 218 times. Petroleum spills can also contaminate the soil with Benzoapyrine. Most of New Orleans was found to have high levels of this contaminant in the soil. Lead was also found and it can be highly toxic to children.

YOU DESERVE CLEAN WATER IN NEW ORLEANS

The citizens of New Orleans have a right to clean and safe water. When water isn’t clean, it can cause major health problems in children, the elderly, and the general population. Lead poisoning can lead to developmental delays in children. Chemicals from oil spills can have an immediate effect on breathing, but can also result in long-term increased risk of cancer to those who have been exposed. While the EPA releases information about contamination, it can sometimes be difficult for the general population to get access to this information. Sometimes victims and their families only become aware that their water was contaminated after they get sick. If you believe you may have been exposed in New Orleans, the groundwater pollution lawyers at Stag Liuzza can research and investigate whether your neighborhood or community may have been affected.

In addition to illness, water pollution can lower property values. No one wants to live in an area with contaminated water or soil. If your property values have been reduced due to soil contamination, you may have certain rights under the law. For example, you may be entitled to pursue a lawsuit with the assistance of a groundwater pollution lawyer like Stag Liuzza in New Orleans.
