Oil and Gas Pollution Lawyers Serving Avoyelles Parish
According to the Sierra Club, the oil and gas industry released approximately 9.8 million metric tons of methane into the atmosphere in 2014 alone. In addition to methane, the oil and gas industry also releases formaldehyde, benzene, acetaldehyde, and ethyl benzene, substances which are known to cause cancer, anemia, brain damage, birth defects, and respiratory problems. Individuals who live near oil and gas wells, and other oil and gas industrial activities could be particularly at risk. According to the Sierra Club, people living in nineteen counties in Louisiana live in areas of risk due to the oil and gas industry. Across the country, 12.8 million people might be living within a half mile of oil and gas wells, factories, and plants.
Industrial activities like fracking have the potential to pollute Louisiana’s water systems, with already local authorities reporting on the presence of natural gas in the aquifer, with several companies facing questioning about their potential role in contaminating the aquifer. This is not the only issue. When fracking companies release wastewater into the environment, this wastewater is much harder to clean by local water utilities. If water utilities use too much chlorine, the reaction between chlorine and fracking wastewater can produce a chemical known to cause cancer and other, more immediate risks, like adverse birth events. If water utilities use too little chlorine, the risk of bacteria in the water can increase, as in recent news cases where brain eating amoeba was found in the water system. At the end of the day, the risk is that people will get sick or injured.
The oil and gas industry can also damage private property and land. Already there have been several lawsuits in Louisiana made by private landowners claiming that fracking activities in the region have led to the pollution of water on their land. This can impact the quality of the land and the value of the land for generations.
Are you concerned about air quality, water quality, and pollution in your community? The oil and gas industry has polluted Louisiana’s air and water, and public officials don’t seem to be taking steps to place greater regulations on the oil and gas industry. Individuals who have been impacted by this inaction have decided to take action into their own hands, by pursuing the oil and gas industry for damages, when they suffer adverse health effects due to drinking polluted water, breathing polluted air, and when their land goes down in value due to pollution. Air Pollution Law Firm Serving Avoyelles Parish
ProPublica has reported that areas of Louisiana have become known as “cancer alley” due to the high rates of cancer cases that are cropping up among people living near petrochemical, oil, and natural gas plants. Reports indicate that Louisiana has some of the most polluted air in the country. Yet, many more petrochemical, oil, and gas plants are being built and opened, some in areas already identified as having polluted air. Doctors in some areas reported to ProPublica that as many as one in three pregnant women in certain parishes were having miscarriages. Unfortunately, no rigorous scientific study has yet to be performed on cancer rates and miscarriage rates in the region, though scientific evidence suggests a risk between exposure to certain chemicals, cancer, and miscarriages. The oil and gas companies claim that there is no evidence, but testing of the air shows the presence of alarming chemicals.
